What is yield, and why is it becoming popular in crypto?
Crypto yield is the return users earn by putting their digital assets to work through mechanisms like staking, lending, liquidity provision, or other onchain financial products.
As of June 2026, DeFi protocols hold over $70 billion in digital assets deployed for lending, liquidity, and yield, while Ethereum staking alone accounts for roughly $60 billion to earn network rewards. For many users, the appeal is simple: if they hold stablecoins, tokenized assets, or other crypto assets, they want those assets to.
In traditional financial products, the mechanics behind returns are often hidden from the user. People may earn interest through a savings account, for example, but they rarely see how the return is generated or how much of the underlying opportunity reaches them.
Crypto changes how users can access their yield by allowing them to interact more directly with lending protocols, staking networks, liquidity markets, tokenized treasuries, and other sources of return.
